Zimbabwean defender Carlington Nyadombo was the big winner at the AmaZulu awards evening held at Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World in Durban on Friday night.

The 26-year-old claimed the Player of the Season and the Player's Player of the Season prizes after a stellar campaign for Usuthu, in which he helped them end seventh in the Absa Premiership.

Nyadombo started 27 out of the 30 league matches for the club and scored one goal, with his commanding presence at centre-back key to their miserly defence which allowed just 24 goals against them last season, the second fewest overall.

He was also an integral part of their Nedbank Cup campaign that saw AmaZulu lose to eventual champions SuperSport United in the semi-finals.

"I feel very honoured that my teammates decided that I deserved to win these awards," Nyadombo said after collecting his award.

"I didn't expect it because we had many players who did well last season, but this is good motivation for me to do even better next season."

The Zimbabwe international beat countryman and captain Tapuwa Kapini as well as Tsweu Mokoro to the Player of the Season award.

Defender Mokoro had some consolation after missing out on the main prize, by scooping the Most Improved Player of the Season award after mostly impressing on the flanks during his 20 league appearances last year.

It was just reward for the 30-year-old, who also received praise for being the best AmaZulu player on the field by Sir Alex Ferguson during a recent friendly match against English club Manchester United.

Attacking midfielder Goodman Dlamini bagged the Adidas Golden Boot Award for scoring the most goals, after netting seven times.

Goalkeeper Kapini, who was also nominated for a number of categories, walked away with the Suncoast Moment of Brilliance Award, while Lunga Sokhela, the club's marketing manager, received the Chairman's Award.
