Cuthbert Malajila scored in added time to help Maritzburg United earn a point when their Absa Premiership match against AmaZulu ended in a 1-1 draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday night.
Usuthu opened the scoring late in the first half and looked to be on their way to victory when Malajila found the late equaliser.
The match kicked off with decent pace as both sides looked to push forward but it was the visitors who had the first chance in the 10th minute.
Kagiso Senamela found himself with space to shoot 18 yards out, but his left-footed attempt went wide of the target.
Five minutes later Ayanda Dlamini tried to test the goalkeeper with an attempt from long range, only for his effort sailed over the crossbar.
However, the hosts had a much better chance in the 21st minute when Malajila was put through on goal, but he didn’t show the composure that was expected as he misfired wide.
Ernst Middendorp’s men continued to put pressure on the visitors and four minutes later Usuthu goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini was forced to make a great save to stop a dangerous cross from Felix Obada.
The deadlock was finally broken on the stroke of halftime when Ayanda Dlamini broke through on the right before playing the ball across for Goodman Dlamini to tap into the back of the net.
Both sides started with a low gear after the break but substitute Diyo Sibisi should’ve done better in the 65th minute when he was given a bit of room on the right 20 yards out, but his shot went straight into Kapini’s gloves.
Then the match lost its spark as both sides became guilty of committing silly fouls, preventing the game from flowing, but Kagiso Senamela was again guilty of missing the target in the 75th minute.
The Team of Choice almost saw themselves two goals down in the 85th minute when goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters missed the ball after coming out of his line, but defender Mor Diouf was able to clear the danger.
Usuthu came close to putting the result beyond doubt in the 89th minute but Ayanda Dlamini saw his shot parried away by Walters, while Goodman Dlamini shot wide from the rebound.
Those misses proved to be costly for Roger Palmgren’s men as they were made to pay for in the second minute of added time when Malajila volleyed home from close range to secure a point for his side.
