Carlington Nyadombo scored the only goal of the match as AmaZulu defeated neighbours Lamontville Golden Arrows 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday night.
Nyadombo scored the decisive goal in the second half as Usuthu pulled a double over their provincial rivals.
The home side came close to taking the lead in the 11th minute when Arrows goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede was forced to punch away a dangerous corner from Marc Van Heerden.
The ball then fell kindly for Donovan Thompson on the edge of the penalty area but his shot flew over the crossbar.
Then in the 27th minute Dillon Sheppard cut inside from the right flank before firing a low left-footed shot, but his effort went wide of the near post.
Arrows then started to look as the more promising side and two minutes later Elrio Van Heerden skipped past his marker before releasing Sheppard on the right, but his shot crashed against the crossbar.
Usuthu almost benefitted from a defensive error three minutes before the break when miscommunication between Thanduyise Khuboni and Gumede allowed Ayanda Dlamini to steal the ball.
The Usuthu striker then played the ball across goal to pick out Dumisani Zwane at the far post, but his volleyed shot went straight to Gumede.
The visitors came close to snatching the lead on the stroke of halftime when fullback Thamsanqa Mkhize delivered one of his trademark crosses from the right to find Collins Mbesuma in the centre of the box, but the Zambian could only watch his glancing header going wide of the far post.
Roger Palmgren’s men fired the first shot on target four minutes after the break when Ayanda Dlamini broke free on the right before driving the ball across, but his effort was held by Gumede.
A minute later Mkhize went on the overlap on the right before delivering an inviting cross which missed Mbesuma in the centre and Sheppard could only volley over the crossbar at the far post.
Then in the 53rd minute Sibusiso Hadebe’s cross found Clifford Ngobeni free in the centre of the area, but his shot clipped the top of the crossbar, while Mbesuma shot straight at Kapini four minutes later.
Muhsin Ertugral’s side then threatened from set pieces and in the 63rd minute Sheppard was unlucky to see his curled freekick coming off the crossbar, while substitute Katlego Mashego drew a brilliant save from Tapuwa Kapini with another curled effort ten minutes later.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 78th minute when Bukasa Kasonga connected with a Van Heerden corner, but his header was blocked by Gumede, only for Nyadombo to nod the ball over the line at the far post.
Usuthu had another chance to bury the game four minutes later but substitute Josef Lekata headed wide after receiving a pinpoint cross from another substitute Kagiso Senamela.
