Played at Sinaba stadium, it was encouraging to see a decent crowd, considering Ezenkosi have just returned to the top flight.
Siyabonga Nontshinga scored both Cosmos goals from the penalty spot while SuperSport’s inspired super subs, Kermit Erasmus and Ashley Hartog, netted with fine attempts.
The match started off fairly slow with some big tackles coming in as expected. Morgan Gould, up against his former team, made sure Matsatsantsa kept things tight at the back in the opening stages.
In the 29th minute Cosmos almost scored from a corner. The ball spun out to Lehlohonolo Nonyane who volleyed from the edge of the danger area only to see Ronwen Williams brilliantly turn the ball onto his post and he gathered the follow up attempt from the impressive Tshidiso Tukane.
In the 33rd minute Gladwin Shitolo just did enough to put off Mame Niang at the far post who was lurking dangerously at the end of a SuperSport cross.
In the 35th minute Cosmos livewire Tukane was brought down by Tebogo Langerman on the edge of the danger area and a penalty was awarded. Nontshinga blasted it beyond Williams’ reach.
Erasmus replaced Mame Niang and Hartog replaced Mduduzi Nyanda at the start of the second half.
Soon after the half time interval, Gould charged in at a corner and beat his marker, but the ball hit his shoulder and missed the target.
But it didn’t take long for the visitors to equalise. In the 52nd minute Erasmus beat the offside trap and showed a great first touch to bring down a long ball from the back.
But he also had the presence of mind to flick the ball away from the onrushing goalkeeper on the edge of the area, and coolly place his shot into an open net.
Then after 60 minutes Hartog made it two for the visitors when he picked up a botched Cosmos clearance, took the ball down with his chest onto his left side and smacked home a volley into the bottom corner.
Just minutes later, Atusaye Nyondo missed an absolute sitter, mis-kicking the ball on a runaway with just the goalkeeper to beat.
But then in the 64th minute, Langerman conceded a second penalty for the night and the same man who scored the first, Nontshinga, buried his second goal.
SuperSport nearly stole the full points when Shiningayamwe dropped a high ball only for Maluleke’s attempted lob to miss the target inside the final ten minutes.
In the dying seconds Shiningayamwe did well to tip over a Maluleke free kick from a central position.
